The Music Man

from Unfinished Houses by Dave Howard

/

about

I wrote this after a friend nicknamed me the "Music Man". At the time I was in awe of some of the amazing talent in the singer-songwriter community in San Diego. I got a lot of love and respect for my writing even though I wasn't the most popular or the biggest draw (never was). I wanted to write something that let all the people who appreciated me know how much of an influence they bore on my playing and writing.

lyrics

I want to sing with your voice. I want to play through your hands, the mystery, oh, of how we came to be friends. I want to live in your heart and feel those words the way you do; the magic of the way you make it all sound true.
And I'm thinking maybe no one in this place can understand. And you know it's crazy she still calls me the Music Man.
But I want to give her your songs to lure her to my warm embrace. To make up, oh, when she's slapped my face. And I can n o longer count the times when I wished I'd said what you wrote or plagiarized you note for note.
-chorus-
Wanted to make sure you'd hear this song before I went out on my own to let you know you'll never walk alone. Whatever turns out to be your lot or turns out to be my few, I hope you know I'll be thinking of you.
-chorus-
